FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On March 16, Land Rover North America, Inc. will
mark its tenth anniversary of retail sales in the United States. From 1987, when the
company retailed 2,586 units in less than 10 months, sales by the importer and distributor
of the legendary British-built Land Rover sport
utility vehicles soared to 23,182 units in calendar year 1996. During the same period,
LRNA's model range rose from one -- the Range Rover
-- to the current four -- the Range Rover 4.0 SE and 4.6 HSE, Discovery and Defender 90,
and the number of outlets has grown from 36 to 108 carefully selected retail partners, 49
of which are the widely acclaimed Land Rover
Centres.
Charles R. Hughes, president, Land Rover North
America, and the current longestserving CEO of a U.S. automotive company, said, "I am
privileged and proud to have led our growth over the past 10 years, and consider mine to
be one of the most enjoyable jobs in the automotive industry. Our renowned vehicles are
recognized arid admired worldwide for their capabilities, and is an honor to lead and
develop the North American market."
Mr. Hughes continued, "The style of the automotive retailing is changing rapidly.
We have led the way by developing Land Rover
Centres dedicated to making the automotive purchase experience a pleasurable and
fulfilling part of the lifestyle of our active, outdoor enthusiast owners who appreciate
the unparalleled competence and heritage of our vehicles."
During the past decade, many prestigious awards have been accorded LRNA's
vehicles, advertising, and conservation efforts.
The celebration will continue on April 30, when LRNA dedicates its new 60,000 square
foot national headquarters building in Lanham, the second in a three-part $10 million
expansion campaign. Last July, the company dedicated the Demonstration Course at Lanham
Creek, designed to showcase Land Rover vehicles'
expertise. The final stage Land Rover University,
which will serve as the primary sales and service training center for the company's retail
partners and feature its own 20-acre off road course, is scheduled for completion this
summer.
Land Rover North America, Inc. is a member of the
Rover Group of Companies,
importing vehicles manufactured by Land Rover, Solihull, England. The Rover Group is a
wholly-owned subsidiary of BMW AG.
