A new chapter was added to the legend of Jeep with the introduction of the all-new Jeep® Wrangler for the 1997 model year. With the most significant changes in the half-century history of the vehicle, Wrangler retained its rich heritage while offering improved off-highway capability and on-highway handling, refined passenger comfort and enhanced ergonomics.

For 1998, the Wrangler's award-winning off-highway capability is further improved by combining the Dana 44 rear axle and the new 3.73 axle ratio which replaces the 3.55 axle ratio offered with the 4.0-liter engine. Additionally, the clutch-starter interlock jumper wire is replaced with a fuse to make it easier to use the starter without the use of the clutch for "key starts" in four-wheel-drive low situations. In addition, Wrangler has improved steering responsiveness with a new gear ratio that varies from 15:1 on center to 13:1 at the extremes of travel The lower on-center ratio improves steering feel, while the higher ratio at the extremes of travel maintains overall maneuverability. Power steering is now standard on all Wranglers.

Features available on Wrangler for the first-time are automatic speed control, Smart Key Immobilizer theft deterrent system and the E-Z Access tilting driver's seat. The latest and most effective method of immobilizing an engine, Smart Key Immobilizer is a sophisticated vehicle theft deterrent system that uses the on-board electronics and a small integrated circuit chip in the key to prevent the engine from running without a valid ignition key.

Jeep Wrangler SE is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 120 horsepower and 140 foot-pounds of torque. Sport and Sahara models are equipped with the 4.0-liter I-6 engine that produces 185 hp and 222 foot-pounds of torque.

Underneath Wrangler's signature body-on-frame construction, the Quadra-Coil suspension gives it better off-highway capability than any of its predecessors or competitors. Introduced for 1997, it boasts an additional seven inches of articulation over the previous leaf spring set up, as well as improved ground clearance and approach and departure angles.

Wrangler's interior retains its rugged, functional character, yet incorporates the modern safety convenience of reduced-output dual air bags; heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; accessory switches; water resistant radio and a lockable glove box.
