S-10, the pickup that offers one of the broadest arrays of models, package and suspension choices in its class, continues as the Chevy high-value, personal pickup for 1998. And along with this versatility comes several new features, including a revised front end appearance, interior enhancements with a front-passenger air bag, engine and chassis refinements and much more. On the outside, S-10 Pickup customers will first notice an all-new look for the front end. A new grille, composite headlamps, a bumper and combined fascia, plus a new air dam and rub strips give S-10 Pickup a contemporary look. The rear end features a new bumper design that complements the new front end treatment, with a ball hitch rating of 350 lb. tongue weight and includes an improved safety chain attachment. Also new are foglamps, available on all models (except ZR2), that provide increased visibility in some adverse driving conditions, along with adding to overall exterior styling. New aluminum wheels are available on 2WD models, and the YCS Exterior Appearance Package receives updated body-side and wheel-opening moldings for a more appealing look.

Finishing off the new exterior are three new paint colors - Light Pewter Metallic, Indigo Blue Metallic (interim availability) and Dark Copper Metallic.

Redesigned seats bring a fresh look to the interior, with new sew patterns and integral headrests. A full-length, floor console on models with bucket seats is styled to match the new instrument panel design. A new mini-console is featured for manual floor shift bench-seat applications. The interior appearance also is enhanced by new front door trim panels, featuring cloth and vinyl upper inserts with molded-in speaker grilles.

New performance features are also a big part of the 1998 S-10 Pickup redesign story. The Vortec 2200 L4 SFI engine, standard on 2WD models, features a number of enhancements for 1998, including Multec I fuel injectors, a composite intake manifold and a modified exhaust system, all of which contribute to reduced engine noise, better driveability and more low end torque over last year's design. Design changes increase horsepower to 120 while delivering 140 lb.-ft of torque.

The available 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission features a new electronically controlled converter clutch for improved efficiency, and a two-piece transmission case for increased stiffness with reduced noise and vibration. S-10 Pickup features new retained accessory power for 1998, which allows the operation of accessories for twenty minutes after the ignition has been turned off, or until a door is opened. Battery-rundown protection also is new, and automatically turns off the interior lights in the event they are inadvertently left on, helping to prevent a dead battery.

As always, safety is an important aspect of S-10 Pickup. There's a standard driver air bag and, new for 1998, a right front-passenger air bag with a deactivation switch. Also new is 4-wheel disc brake availability, which is now standard on 4x4 models. S-10 Pickup features new Automatic Exterior Lamp Control, which automatically turns on the headlamps to full intensity at dusk and returns them to standard Daytime Running Lamps mode during daylight hours. And, a new turn signal reminder provides an audible chime if the signal has been left on for 3/4 of a mile. Also contributing to the overall S-10 Pickup safety package for 1998 is the new Passlock® theft-deterrent system. Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) with new Automatic Exterior Lamp Control engage automatically when the ignition is on to increase S-10 Pickup visibility to other drivers. DRL run at a lower intensity than regular headlamps. New automatic Exterior Lamp Control switches automatically from DRL during daylight driving to regular headlamps (and the rest of the exterior lighting) when the system senses light has diminished It includes a time-delay feature for tunnels and other temporary lighting changes.

For example, a remote cassette player option is available when the integral CD player is ordered. S-10 Pickup has extensive corrosion protection that includes the us of two-sidegalvanized steel, for all exterior body panels (except the roof and cargo box front panel). The galvanized zinc coating helps prevent surface rust due to minor chips, scratches and holes that start from the inside. The S-10 welded Fleetside cargo box is available in 6-foot (Short-Box) or 7.5-foot (Long-Box) sizes.
· Double-wall construction prevents dents on the inside of the cargo box and tailgate showing on the outside.
· A two-tier loading feature provides pockets in upper cargo-box walls, for a second loading level above the wheelwells.

An available third door brings a greater level of convenience to S-10 Extended-Cab Pickup models. The third door provides direct driver-side access to the rear compartment. The door swings out for easy loading and unloading of cargo. And, it's a convenient way for passengers with disabilities to store mobility aids. The driver-side jump seat is deleted when the third door is ordered.
Exterior Paint
Standard basecoat/clearcoat paint on S-10 Pickup resists fading and provides a high-gloss shine for long-lasting exterior beau. The clearcoat system is formulated to minimize the effects of acid rain and other environmental damage. Clearcoat finish is used with all colors - solids and metallics.

A stiff, four-sided, ladder-type frame with bolted and riveted cross members provides S-10 Pickup with a solid foundation. The front box section has tremendous strength to support the engine and front suspension. The drop-center frame design makes entry and exit easy with a low step-in height. It also provides maximum ground clearance for off roading, while maintaining a low center of gravity for responsive handling on pavement.

Improved Vortec 2200 L4 SFI Engine (LN2)
The improved Vortec 2200 L4 SFI in-line four-cylinder engine is standard on ZWD S-10 Pickup models, and produces 120 horsepower @ 5000 rpm. This engine was systematically designed to minimize friction between vital components, maximize fuel economy and enhance performance. Quick starts and reduced noise and vibration are additional benefits of the Vortec 2200 engine design. OBD II (On-Board Diagnostics Second Generation) is standard. Enhancements for 1998 make possible reduced engine noise and more low-end torque.

Wouldn't it be nice if every car had its own guardian angel, to keep it secure when its owner is not around? Well, S-10 Pickup owners get the next best thing the security of the Passlock® theft-deterrent system, standard on all models. With Passlock® if an attempt is made to start the vehicle without the valid key, the vehicle will initially run, but immediately shut down and remain disabled for about ten minutes. This is accomplished by a sensor that is individually matched to the car's ignition axle before it leaves the factory. This eliminates the need for a specially coded ignition key. So, while Passlock® doesn't have wings like most guardian angels, we're pretty confident that it can fly in the face of crime.
