NEW FOR 1998 - Buy The Discovery Here

For 1998, Land Rover's versatile compact sport utility vehicle, the Discovery, known worldwide for its unsurpassed off road prowess, will be seen around town, on the highway and exploring forest trails in an eye-catching array of fresh paint colors and trim options. To simplify and add value to the Discovery line, last year's three trim levels have been reduced to two: the LE and LSE. Both are well-equipped, sharing such standard comfort and convenience features as heated eight-way power front seats with leather upholstery, cruise control, dual sunroofs, air conditioning and one-touch down front windows.

The LE is available in a total of nine paint options, four of which are new: Chawton White, Cobar Blue, Rutland Red and Woodcote Green. All are paired with a Bahama Beige leather interior. All four doors receive luxury touches and an all-new rearview mirror features integrated map lights. In the rear, a center armrest is added to the bench seat. Available in five exterior colors (Beluga Black, White Gold, British Racing Green, Willow Green and Oxford Blue), the LSE is upholstered in Lightstone leather. Elegance in the passenger compartment is further enhanced by a wood-trimmed center console with leather-covered gear shift handle and cubby box.

Suited to on- and off-road applications, the Discovery LE rides on 16-inch dished alloy wheels and Michelin M+S or Goodyear Eagle GT+4 235/70HR16 tires.

EXTERIOR FEATURES - Buy The Discovery Here

A more distinctive exterior presence is evident on the top-of the-line Discovery LSE; chrome bumpers, "Classic" stainless steel door handles and a bright metallic insert on the body-side rub strip add flair to Discovery's appearance. A color-keyed front spoiler, grille, wing mirrors and front and rear bumper end caps further differentiate the LSE from the LE. Replacing the LE's dished alloy wheel is a "Boost" alloy wheel with a satin finish and jeweled wheel center caps.

AUDIO SYSTEM - Buy The Discovery Here

The LSE's premium harman/kardon audio system is similar to the one available in the Discovery's upscale Land Rover stablemate, the Range Rover. The standard compact disc player features a six-disc autochanger.

STANDARD FEATURES - Buy The Discovery Here

As with every Land Rover product, Discovery is loaded with standard features, including permanent four-wheel drive, four-wheel, four-channel all terrain anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), dual airbags and side impact protection beams. For security, the remote keyless entry system features engine immobilization and interior light activation. Land Rover HomeLink™ opens garage doors and gates, or turns on house lighting at the touch of a button. In the event of an accident, the vehicle's inertia switch stops fuel flow, unlocks all doors and activates the hazard lights. To ensure that Discovery's drivers can fnd their destinations both day and night, halogen headlamps provide a brighter and whiter light than conventional sealed beams; the headlamp washers are automatically activated when the windshield washers are operated, as long as the headlights are switched to low beams. In low visibility situations, drivers may elect to use the fog lights nestled in the front spoiler and rear bumper.

TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE - Buy The Discovery Here

For all Discoverys, the only transmission is a ZF four-speed automatic gearbox, mated to a two-speed transfer case with locking center differential. The parking brake, mounted on the driveshaft, engages all four wheels when the center differential is locked. Powered by a 182 bhp aluminum, 4.0 litre V-8 engine with 233 lb-ft of torque, Discovery is capable of towing up to 7,700 lbs in low range. A trailer hitch receiver integrated into the frame exceeds Class III specifications. In a vehicle equally adept in the city or on the open road, Discovery drivers enjoy a command driving position for greater visibility, combined with front and rear anti-roll bars for superior handling during cornering and coil spring suspension for a comfortable ride. Unique among compact sport utility vehicles, Discovery offers practicality both on and off-pavement with a 100-inch wheelbase and Land Rover construction hallmarks such as a boxed-steel ladder-style frame, permanent four-wheel drive, aluminum body panels and solid axles.

SEATS - Buy The Discovery Here

Discovery's 60/40 split rear seats fold to provide nearly 70 cubic feet of convenient storage space to accommodate a variety of cargo sizes and shapes. Optional for both the LE and LSE is a rear seat package, which includes two folding leather jump seats for seven-passenger seating, rear air conditioning and a hydraulic rear step for easy access to the cargo area or roof.
